Have you ever wanted to add a factory entirely unique to your garden? This week we have a plant that is one of the most unique plants that we 've seen - Corylus contorta Avellena, walking stick, commonly known as Harry Lauder or Contorted Filbert. What makes this shrub is so rare that the stems become twisted, the twisted forms. The branches, twigs and even leaves corkscrews are twisted.
Each walking stick by Harry Lauder was propagated from a single plant was discovered in an English hedgerow in the 19th century. The branches will add outstanding winter to early spring and the interest your garden. They are particularly ornamental in the early spring when they are covered with drooping catkins. Contorted Filbert works well planted as a specimen or as opposed to more traditional shrubs. Branches can be cut and forced into the water inside. When kittens dry they can be removed and the bare branches can remain beautiful without water for years.
Planting and maintenance
Walking stick Harry Lauder has a good, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. Occasional thinning of branches will increase the twisted form. Expect it to reach ten feet tall and wide.
- For best results, plant in early spring or autumn.
- Does best in full sun with some protection against the hottest midday sun. Also works well in full sun, shade and light.
- Fertilize with Cottonseed Meal and Kelp Meal in early spring and fall.
- Hardy in zones 5-8
