What's better than flowers and a brunch in your honor on Mother's Day?
Children and spouses have done for many decades. Sending the brunch of flowers, long distance (the greatest day for phone calls of the year) and reservations to celebrate too expensive mother or spouse of everything it does. Yet somehow it always sounds a little hollow, as if we were pre-programmed to make one or all three things at the right time. We're like Pavlov's dog heard the message "incoming" bell push for our actions. In too stressed, more regular world, Mother's Day has become a "to-do list" holiday. We order the flowers, pick up mom, eat, thank fuck, home by car and check the list.
But it should be that way. I am fortunate to share my home and children with a woman who speaks her mind. She was never content with the status quo. It lets me know that a bouquet of Roses $ 9.99 from the Safeway does not really say much more: "Yes, I was at the grocery store and thought of you straight section of fruit. "Not that she is ungrateful for thoughts just like that, it does address the same day as mom seriously, but like most women she knows when she is put on.
So, like many modern families, we spend more time preparing for Hallmark holiday to think that the honoree would really appreciate rather than what we said we should do. In some cases, it is a brunch in a luxury hotel on top of California Street where we can not waste fund education our children in a frenzy of eating too with the sound of a harp. My mother likes it, but it does not happen in San Francisco often.
To my good woman, who loves the outdoors, almost anything we can do that involves hills, muddy shoes, and complaints from children who ask "how others? "is very good for her. No extra fees, no flowers, just a little time spent sharing the outdoors with the family. We'll go to Crissy Field and fly kites, or in the Marin Headlands to walk along the cliffs, or in Golden Gate Park to walk the Labyrinth. There are hundreds of places where to go that will entertain children while satisfying his need to get some time away.
We are not afraid to go out conventions of the Day of the traditional Mother's. On the positive side, this means that not getting a reservation does not mean I do not treasure her as a mother or a partner. No purchase flowers does not mean that I have forgotten the simplest of symbols. I can simply wait until the morning of Mother's Day when we are setting Shelf of burnt toast and orange juice in front of her in her bed to give her what she wants most, a short time with the family to make some something she particularly likes.
The day my mom advice: forget the map and the lines at restaurants. Do all zero this year. Ask children to make their own cards and make breakfast at home, followed by something mom loves to do, whether a museum, an exhibition of flowers, bowling ball, or afternoon at home in front of an old movie.
And that goes for the day Dad too. But remember, Mom, if you are thinking of golf, you need to know one thing: Mothers Day is the happiest day of the year to get any tee time you want, but try to plan a golf trip on Father's Day.
