A wet basement is more than just a nuisance. It causes serious damage to your house and harbors dangerous mold. It is estimated that more than half of the homes have damp basements. Approximately one third of those have mold and mildew.

Mold can be anywhere. They are a part of the kingdom fungi and plays a key role in nature in the decomposition of leaves, wood and other plant debris. But when they start to digest organic matter that we do not want them as our homes, we have a problem. All molds need to grow is moisture. They can grow on wood, ceiling tiles, wallpaper, paint, carpet, insulation and sheet rock.

We are exposed to spores mold in several ways. When disturbed, their spores are released into the air we breathe. You can also be exposed by skin contact when handling moldy materials.

For normally healthy people, most molds are not a concern majeure. But if you have allergies, asthma, lung disease or underlying immune suppression, you may be at higher risk for infections from mold. Be aware that certain types of molds produce toxins called mycotoxins. These have been known to be harmful to humans, causing nausea, headache, fatigue and respiratory and eye irritation. If you think you have these symptoms of mold present or not, consult a doctor.

Mold is normally present in white thread-like growths or areas of small black spots. It is often accompanied by a rotten, "musty" odor. Mold hidden behind wall coverings, drywall and ceiling tiles or under the carpet is more difficult to detect.

The the most common places to find mold in your basement are those where there is water damage from flooding or leaks in pipes or water heaters. It can also develop due to condensation when moist air condenses on the warm fountain wall surfaces or clothing, furniture and other large objects are against the wall. High Water Use and humidity can create a perfect environment for mold. Be sure you do not hang laundry to dry in the basement and check that your dryer is venting outside properly.

Because there is no way to completely rid your home of all mold spores, the only way to control growth by controlling moisture. Seeking the source of moisture, either poor drainage, faulty gutters or foundation cracks, and repair problems.

There are other simple steps you can take to control mold in your basement. Moving very large objects away from walls and increase traffic air. Remove to fresh air when possible. Consider using a dehumidifier to remove moisture from the air. Fans extraction to remove steam and moisture from bathrooms and basement laundry. Dry and clean the carpets damaged by water, carpets and furniture in a day or two. For best results, remove and replace items damaged by water.

If water damage is minor, you can clean by washing areas with a solution of diluted bleach followed by a mold inhibitor, as a solution of borate-based detergent. If the mold problem is large or if health problems, consider having a professional to clean the area.
